The “US States” report is a part of the Geographic reports. This report provides insights into the visitor statistics based on their state of origin within the United States. It is a crucial tool for understanding the geographical distribution of your US-based audience.
Accessing the Report
To access the “US States” report:
Navigate to the WP Statistics plugin in your WordPress dashboard.
Select “Statistics” from the menu.
Under the “Geographic” section, click on “US States”.
Report Components
The “US States” report is divided into several key components:
State: The list of US states from which your website has received visitors.
Visitor Count: The number of unique visitors from each US state.
View Count: The total number of page views generated by visitors from each US state.
View Details: A button to view more detailed statistics for each state. Note that detailed single state reports are available with the Data Plus add-on.
State Detection
We detect cities, regions, and countries through the user’s IP and use the GeoIP library.
Note for Site Owners
For more accurate location reports, make sure your GeoIP database is updated. You can update the database through:
Settings -> Data Sources -> Update database for both “GeoIP Collection” and “GeoIP City”.
Version Notes
The US States report was introduced in version 14.8. Additionally, we made an under-the-hood change in version 14.7 to detect regions. Therefore, if you notice discrepancies between the numbers in the Countries report and the US States report, it is because we did not track regions before version 14.7.
Utilizing the Data
Understanding the geographical distribution of your US-based audience can help you tailor your content and marketing strategies to better suit the preferences and behaviors of visitors from different states. For instance:
If a significant portion of your traffic comes from states with large urban centers, consider creating content that caters to city dwellers.
High engagement from specific states might justify targeted advertising or localized content to further increase engagement and conversions.
