Cities Report

The “Cities” report is a part of the Geographic reports. This report provides insights into the visitor statistics based on their city of origin. It is a crucial tool for understanding the more granular geographical distribution of your website’s audience.

Accessing the Report

To access the “Cities” report:

  1. Navigate to the WP Statistics plugin in your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Select “Statistics” from the menu.
  3. Under the “Geographic” section, click on “Cities”.

Report Components

The “Cities” report is divided into several key components:

  • City: The list of cities from which your website has received visitors.
  • Region: The region associated with each city.
  • Country: The country where each city is located.
  • Visitor Count: The number of unique visitors from each city.
  • View Count: The total number of page views generated by visitors from each city.

City Detection

We detect cities, regions, and countries through the user’s IP and use the GeoIP library.

Note for Site Owners

For more accurate location reports, make sure your GeoIP database is updated. You can update the database through:

  • Settings -> Data Sources -> Update database for both “GeoIP Collection” and “GeoIP City”.

Version Notes

The Cities report was introduced in version 14.8. Additionally, we made an under-the-hood change in version 14.7 to detect cities. Therefore, if you notice discrepancies between the numbers in the Countries report and the Cities report, it is because we did not track cities before version 14.7.

Utilizing the Data

Understanding the geographical distribution of your audience at the city level can help you tailor your content and marketing strategies to better suit the preferences and behaviors of visitors from different regions. For instance:

  • If a significant portion of your traffic comes from major cities in non-English speaking countries, consider adding multilingual support to your website.
  • High engagement from specific cities might justify targeted advertising or localized content to further increase engagement and conversions.
