Deprecating Server-Side Tracking in WP Statistics 15

In our last version (14.9), we displayed a notice about deprecating server-side tracking for users who rely on this method. This change will take effect in version 15, scheduled for release in Q4 2024, as part of an important refactor focused
at enhancing the overall performance and accuracy of WP Statistics.

Why the Shift from Server-Side to Client-Side Tracking?

Server-side tracking has traditionally been used to gather data using server logs. However, it has limitations in data accuracy and completenes. In comparison, client-side tracking, which has been our default method for the past few years, allows for more precise data collection by directly interacting with the user’s browser.

Addressing Common Concerns

We understand that transitioning fully to client-side tracking might raise some concerns, especially regarding privacy and GDPR compliance. Here’s how we address these concerns:

  1. No Use of Cookies: Our client-side tracking method does not use cookies. We are committed to maintaining a cookie-free tracking environment. More information can be found here.
  2. Anonymization and Privacy: By default, our tracking methods ensure privacy, avoiding the collection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). For more details, visit this resource.
  3. Privacy Audit: We recommend checking the Privacy Audit page in WordPress to ensure your configuration does not track any PII data. This step will help maintain compliance with GDPR and other privacy regulations.
  4. Tracking Devices Without JavaScript Support: Another concern is tracking devices that do not support JavaScript, such as the Lynx browser or some screen readers used by individuals with disabilities. Currently, only server-side tracking can track these types of devices. However, we are adding this capability to version 15, ensuring that you can continue to track these devices.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q2: Will client-side tracking use cookies?

A: No, our client-side tracking method does not use cookies. We are committed to maintaining a tracking environment that respects user privacy.

Q3: How does client-side tracking improve data accuracy?

A: Client-side tracking directly interacts with the user’s browser, capturing more precise data about user interactions and behaviors on your site.

Q4: What about GDPR compliance?

A: Our tracking methods are designed to be GDPR compliant. We avoid using cookies and do not collect PII by default. Users can check their Privacy Audit page to ensure compliance.

Q5: When will server-side tracking be deprecated?

A: Server-side tracking will be deprecated in version 15 of WP Statistics, scheduled for release in Q4 2024.

I switched this setting to your recommendation and my reported daily traffic suddenly decreased from abut 90 visitors per day to abut 6 per day. Was this a coincidence or was the higher value not accurate?
